10 Celebrities Ready For Their Reality TV Moment…

Last week We announced their line up of new shows for the summer and fall seasons. Among the offerings – a docu-soap following cosmetically enhanced comedienne Joan Rivers and her daughter Melissa. Meanwhile Dancing With The Stars is basking in the glow of record ratings due to a sensationally cast season – Kate Gosselin, Pamela Anderson, Shannon Doherty – a trio made in tabloid heaven. While over on Celebrity Apprentice the delightfully daffy Cyndi Lauper is proving to be TV gold as she infuriates and alienates her team-mates with long winded stories, chronic ADD and bizarre off kilter ideas.

As someone who’s worked on numerous reality series over the years I think Cyndi is dream casting. She’s exactly who you want on a reality show – a celebrity who hasn’t been overexposed on similar series (hello Brigitte Nielsen) and so has an aura of mystery around them. We all think we know Cyndi Lauper – but now we’re realizing we don’t really know her at all.

Which led me to thinking – who else would be a dream reality show casting?

Here’s 10 celebrities I’d love to see signing up in the near future…

1)   GRACE JONES – stand back Omarosa, there’s a new reality villainess in town! Oh how I’d love to see Grace Jones in pretty much any reality concept. She’s larger than life, intimidating, sexual, scary and completely unpredictable. Who knows when and how she’d snap… but there’s no doubt you’d have fireworks. Would she do it? Unlikely – but then who would have ever thought Johnny Rotten would undertake the indignities of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here in the UK?

2)   CARRIE PREJEAN She’s the California beauty queen who infuriated the gay community with her anti marriage equality rants. But after hastily publishing her autobiography her career went down in flames amid accusations of hypocrisy and double standards (breast implants and naked pictures aren’t in the bible sweetie). Prejean is the ultimate bitchy cheerleader – permanently angry, aloof and antagonistic, loves to play the victim and let’s face it, not the brightest lipstick in the case (‘opposite marriage’ anyone!) Career wise she desperately needs a reality show now. My bet – she’ll be on our screens before the year is out.

3)   NAOMI CAMPBELL – no cell phone gags here – who needs accessories with a personality as combustible as Campbell’s? Naomi’s tabloid history stretches back years and reports of her modeling misbehavior are legendary. But Naomi is the perfect example of a celebrity who could really benefit from a well-chosen reality show. Public perceptions of Campbell are so strong that she could really surprise people if she shows a sweeter, funnier side – as she occasionally has done on talk shows in the past.

4)   BOY GEORGE – he narrowly missed out on a stint in the UK Big Brother house, settling instead for a reality show on Vh1. Let’s hope the show re-airs in the US – or even better George agrees to a US reality show – because he’s pure casting gold. Boy George enlivens any chat show he appears on, has an opinion on everything, doesn’t hold his tongue and yet still manages to be likeable and warm. He’d be fantastic going head to head with The Donald, and with the right song could even score chart success again.

5)   ALICE COOPER – He hasn’t had a hit in over 20 years and will leave anyone under 25 scratching their heads – but Cooper is ideal for the ‘father figure’ role on an upcoming reality show. Unlike his shock music successor Marilyn Manson (another dream booking), Alice seems genuinely smart and could more than hold his own in conversation and debate. Pair him up with Miss Prejean and just watch the sparks fly.

.

6)   CLAY AITKEN – Clay is a mass of contradictions. The gay singer with a middle- American fan base. The sweet boy next door damaged by reports of diva demands. The best-selling Idol runner-up with the biggest critical backlash. After alienating his traditional audience Clay desperately needs a new crowd. Broadway can only get him so far… but the right reality show – who knows? If he’s honest and upfront I think people could warm to his struggles, mistakes and journey.

7)   AXL ROSE – Wow – where to begin with Axl? Years down the line we forget just how huge a star he was in the late 80’s – right up there with Jackson and Madonna… and yet after almost 15 years of radio silence, tinkering and false starts, Chinese Democracy was greeted by a collective ‘so what’. Through it all Axl has managed to maintain an aura of secrecy around himself, and made a fair few enemies along the way. But is he a complete control freak – or a decent guy struggling with great expectations? Only one way to find out…

8)   TYRA BANKS Okay she’s technically already in the reality pool with her Top Model franchise (which she, ahem, created – more on that another post). But let’s face it we’ve never really seen the real Tyra – and that’s what good reality TV does – show you the person behind the headlines. Banks has spent years perfecting her image as ‘sister’ and ‘confidante’ to her audience – but I think true Tyra could be a lot more interesting – especially if some of the behind the scenes Top Model stories are true…

9)   DR PHIL Now this would be TV heaven! He may have been anointed by Queen O and had his own successful talk show for the last 8 years, but there’s always been something slightly ‘off’ about Dr Phil. Being blunt – he just comes across as a guy who wouldn’t be nice to work for (and we all know how TV breeds bad attitudes) After coming across as a voice of reason on Oprah – he now feels very tabloid and trashy – but is he really sincere or just sensationalist? A spot in the reality TV spotlight could really go either way. But it sure would be fun to watch…

10)  NANCY GRACE / ROSIE O’DONNELL Two strong ladies. Two polarizing figures. Casting either of these two ladies would guarantee plenty of heated debate but it might also allow their softer sides to shine through. I have a feeling Rosie is a pretty great person underneath that sometimes angry exterior. And Nancy? Well at least her on-screen fire is frequently directed towards criminals and the faulty legal system. Opening her heart to her own personal stories and tragedies could give her a whole other dimension…

But what do you think? Would you like to see any of the above on a reality show soon – and which ones? Who else do you think would be a great casting? Fire away…
