Are You Having A Summer TV Slump?
Who knows – maybe it’s because we’ve been so spoiled in the Fall and Spring TV seasons – but is anyone else experiencing a bit of a summer TV slump at the moment?
Normally I have an over-loaded DVR goading me to keep up – but at the moment my DVR is looking pretty darn empty aside from a multitude of HGTV shows my partner insists on recording (he’s hot for property shows!)
It’s not that there’s NOTHING to watch at all… more slim pickings.
I am following America’s Got Talent as usual, but while Howard Stern is proving to be a pretty terrific judge – did you hear his sharp and incisive comments last week – the talent itself seems a tad uninspired this year. That said AGT normally picks up as it nears the Finals so who knows (my money’s on comedian Tom Cotter whose material so far has been terrific)
Meanwhile True Blood is its usual self – entertaining but a total mess! There are just way too many plots and characters this year and nothing really adds up. Still at least we’re getting extra Pam this season! Then there’s Episodes which came back last week as strong as ever but it’s still too early to tell if the show’s going to stay on form all season long.
What else? Well for me The Newsroom was a total turd of a show – so I won’t be sampling that one again! Preachy, unrealistic and full of speechifying, The Newsroom is a show so desperate to prove its cleverness that it just exhausting. The West Wing 2.0 it ain’t!
Okay so I’m excited for Political Animals and the final season of Damages. And in August we get new Face Off (didn’t season 2 just end though?). But overall it’s all a bit slim pickings until September and the official new start of the TV season.
Personally I’m really missing Mad Men as a summer series – it was great having the show back earlier in the year but the Spring was so overcrowded by terrific TV I could happily have waited a couple more months!
Once again the big 4 networks have pretty much thrown in the towel when it comes to summer TV. If you’re not a fan of ghastly dating shows like The Bachelor, Love In The Wild, Take Me Out or The Choice, or past their prime reality shows (Big Brother) you’re kind of out of luck! Meanwhile over on cable it’s all feeling a bit same old, same old. Jersey Shore spin offs that aren’t really working (Snooki and JWoww), formerly hot series that are already fading (Falling Skies), an 80’s soap that should be huge but really isn’t (Dallas) and more USA / TNT style offerings that no-one I know watches – Suits, The Closer, White Collar, etc.
Oh well – this is what the summer movie season is for. Plus I’m getting plenty of time to catch up on DVD’s I may have missed… and the odd bit of reading! And at least we have a jam-packed Fall schedule to look forward too… I can already taste Revenge!!!
But what about you – are you finding this summer’s TV offerings a bit slim? Struggling to find shows to watch? What’s keeping you entertained this year… comment away!
OF COURSE there is one show worth watching this summer!!! Our own Can You Survive A Horror Movie, airing Friday 13th July at 9pm on Chiller. Check out the latest trailer… featuring yours truly!

My summer watching: The Glades, Longmire, Breaking Bad, The Closer and the Yankees. Really liked Girls on HBO. Watched one and half episodes of The Newsroom – dislike. Always surfing for good movies. Watched “Big Fan” with Patton Oswalt on the Sundance Channel. Good movie. Recorded “The Quiet American” on Sundance with Michael Caine and Brendan Frasier. I have seen the movie it’s very good. Looking forward to watching it again. Stay cool everyone it’s hot this summer.

Hey Judy – couldn’t get into Girls – found the characters unappealing! Think a lot of people were disappointed by The Newsroom!
