Nowadays she’s one of the world’s most successful actresses – and an Oscar nominee to boot – but even Catwoman had to start somewhere! Here’s Anne Hathaway in her first TV appearance on a commercial for Better Homes and Gardens. And guess what she’s crying. Again! This spot first aired in 1999, around the time that Hathaway’s career officially launched on the short lived Fox comedy, Get Real. That show only lasted for one season, but 2 years later Anne hit it big in The Princess Diaries, followed by the likes of Brokeback Mountain, The Devil Wears Prada, Rachel Getting Married, The Dark Knight Rises, Les Miserables and, umm, Bride Wars. Well I guess you can’t win them all. (more…)
The Old Navy nostalgia fest continues…
Hot on the heels of the brand’s 90210 inspired commercials – and their Backstreet Boys campaign – the day glo clothing company have now reunited The Griswolds for their holiday advertising campaign. For anyone under the age of 30 the Grisworlds were the stars of the National Lampoon Vacations movies – Vacation, European Vacation, Christmas Vacation and Vegas Vacation (plus a DVD spin off that nobody really watched)
There’s Beverly D’Angelo (Ellen Griswald), Dana Barron (the original Audrey, later replaced by Dana Hill), Anthony Michael Hall (the original Rusty) and Jason Lively (‘Euro’ Rusty from the sequel)
And of course… Chevy Chase!
Yep, the Community star who recently argued that sitcoms were the lowest form of entertainment before quitting his role on Community clearly has no problem selling out for a corporate clothing company in a series of not especially funny adverts. Ah the power of the mighty dollar. No wonder people think Chase is an asshole! That said this isn’t the first time the Vacation clan have shilled for a product – Chevy and Beverly also featured in a 2010 Superbowl ad…
Personally I’m just waiting for the inevitable Clueless and Melrose Place campaigns! You just know they’re coming More >
2012 has been a pretty amazing year for Channing Tatum with The Vow, 21 Jump Street and Magic Mike all bringing in the bucks. And I have to say – good for him. Tatum took some big risks this year – trying his hand at comedy and starring in a movie that could easily have made him a laughing stock. You see Russell Brand – this is how you show versatility – and achieve career longevity!
But before Tatum broke out he was a successful model and dancer. Blink and you’ll miss him in the video for Ricky Martin’s She Bangs (ah the irony!) Plus back in 2002 Channing shot a couple of commercials for Mountain Dew and Pepsi…

Okay – tissues at the ready!
Here’s the most beautiful, awesome and most powerful commercial I’ve come across this year – hailing from Australia and in support of marriage equality.
The video’s called ‘It’s Time’ and is already a viral sensation with over 3 million views on You Tube in the last week alone. It’s one of the most potent videos I’ve seen so far in support of equal marriage rights – and far better than the bland and gutless US equivalents which have so far failed to really take off.
I don’t normally touch on political / social issues here on the site, but as a gay man myself in a long term relationship I feel very passionately about the cause of marriage equality. In fact not being able to marry has caused myself and my partner a lot of problems – both personal and financial. I honestly don’t understand how people who constantly call for smaller government seem so determined to have that same government legislate people’s private lives! Still it’s a battle we WILL win in the end – marriage equality is inevitable.
The handsome star of the video is a New Zealand actor / director / writer called Julian Shaw More >
Yesterday, over at the Huffington Post I spotted a fun feature looking at celebrities who’ve starred in McDonalds commercials – including Michael J Fox, Julianna Margulies and Christopher Meloni…
But check out the most amusing advert of the bunch – former Will and Grace star Megan Mullally shilling for the burger giant back in 1983!
Megan would have been about 25 at the time and is still instantly recognizable, with that squeaky voice that would eventually morph into the high pitched Karen Walker.
I’m a big Megan fan and think she’s been criminally wasted since her Will and Grace heyday on shows like Party Down and In the Motherhood. And let’s not even talk about that butter commercial! Someone please get Megan a starring role in a worthy 2012 Fall sitcom – she totally deserves it…
In the meantime check out Megan in action… oh and as an added bonus, look out for a young John Goodman in his pre-Roseanne days! (more…)
Over the last couple of weeks we showcased what Chris Evans, Ryan Gosling and James Franco were all up to before they made it famous. And today’s the turn of their fellow summer movie star Jesse Eisenberg.
Jesse is starring in the new comedy 30 Minutes Or Less (or as I call it – ‘Yet Another Attempt To Make Aziz Ansari A Star’) but is of course most well known for movies like Zombieland, The Squid And The Whale and obviously The Social Network.
But back in 2001 Jesse was still a newbie to the acting scene. Check him out in action in this UK Dr Pepper commercial, hinging on the soda’s famous tag line ‘What’s The Worst That Could Happen’…
Watch the commercial and find out for yourself… it’s Jesse playing the stock ‘Jesse Eisenberg nerdy character’ (I guess Michael Cera wasn’t available) but still interesting to see the actor at age 17 finding his feet…
Check out La Lohan filming a totally bizarre commercial for Air New Zealand alongside a decidedly creepy puppet called Rico. As you doubtless know Lindsay is under house arrest at the moment so her career options are definitely limited – but even so – is this really the best she could do?
The whole routine is horribly awkward and stilted and though Lindsay does look good it’s hard to reconcile this commercial with the woman who just a few years ago was a budding movie star. Put it this way – Rico’s last interviewee was David Hasselhoff… enough said!
Funnily enough I went to see Crazy, Stupid, Love last night, the new romantic comedy starring Steve Carell, Julianne Moore and Ryan Gosling (it’s very good!) Emma Stone plays Ryan’s love interest in the film and watching her in action it felt like the kind of role Lindsay would have been perfect for – if she hadn’t f***ed her whole career up! Heck, Stone even sounds like Lindsay in places…
But for now it’s just Lindsay and the puppets paying the rent. I just wonder if Lohan will ever be able to get herself More >
Here at Remote Patrolled we’re always on the lookout for cool clip and commercials to share with the world – and yesterday this pretty amazing viral campaign from France caught my eye…
The clip’s called Unleash Your Fingers and celebrates the launch of the Galaxy SII phone in France. To promote the product Samsung flew in ‘finger tutting’ phenomenon JayFunk to showcase his rather unique skills.
Seems to have worked – the video’s already been viewed over 3 million times after just a month online…
Be sure to keep watching until the 0.38 mark, where the ad gets REALLY interesting…
Cool stuff, huh? (more…)
Time for a bit of controversy here at Remote Patrolled!
Check out the recently released commercial for WikiLeaks, which spoofs the iconic Mastercard commercials and appeals for donations to offset the company’s financial blockade.
As you probably know, Mastercard is on the companies – along with Paypal and Visa – who are blocking the company’s finances. So what better way to get back at them!
The final shot features Wiki’s famous frontman Julian Assange with the familiar Mastercard sign off (but why is there a mystery guy hanging around in the last shot – looks messy to me!)
So two debates here – first up – what do you think of the commercial itself?
And secondly – should a network run an advert like this? Or would you be offended if you saw this ad on your favorite channel…
Fire away everyone!
So there I was watching TV last night when one of the best adverts of the year leaped out at me!
Did you see it? It was the Google advert promoting the It Gets Better campaign featuring the likes of Anne Hathaway, Adam Lambert, Lady Gaga – and freaking Woody from Toy Story speaking up for tolerance and respect! Wow – how amazing was that – to see an iconic Disney figure promoting gay equality and fighting back against the bullies.
I’m stunned that an advert like this airs in prime-time on American TV – and on Fox no less, sister network to a channel that’s recently been going after Glee as too gay!
Well done Google, Dan Savage and everyone else working with the It Gets Better project. It really does – I promise you! (more…)
