What a season it’s been for American Idol so far this year!
How so? Well aside from a scene featuring a contestant falling off the stage, Season 11 of the long running music competition show has been notable for one key factor – it’s almost total lack of buzz!
So far this season there hasn’t been a single contestant who’s made headlines in the way that the likes of Pia and Casey did last year, or even a terrible contestant like William Hung did several seasons ago.
The fact is NO ONE is talking about Idol this year, and this total lack of buzz is reflected in the show’s ratings. Put simply, Idol is in freefall.
I’ve already commented on Idol’s 2012 slippage in an earlier post back in January, but since then Idol has only fallen further. On Thursday night last week, Idol pulled in ‘just’ 15.64 million viewers and a 4.5 18-49 share. Wow!
By now you’ve probably heard the news… for the first time ever American Idol is starting to look vulnerable.
Yep, Wednesday’s opening night ratings for the first show of the 2011 season plunged a painful 17% in total viewers (to 21.93 million) and an even more disturbing 24% in the 18-49 demo (from a 9.8 to a 7.4). And the trend continued last night – with Idol even BEATEN by CBS’s Big Bang Theory and not even reaching 18 million. Ouch!
Now first up let’s just say these are still great ratings. American Idol is now in its 11th year – and for a show that old to be scoring over 20 million viewers for its opening night is pretty darn incredible. Most shows would be thrilled to come even close to those numbers.
However, those ratings do represent a significant chink in the veteran talent show’s armor. For years American Idol grew season after season, becoming such a ratings monster that it virtually crushed its competition. Sure this week’s premiere did hurt competing shows (most notably the NBC ‘comedy’ line-up of Whitney and Are You There, Chelsea – but that’s no big feat!) – but ABC’s line up remained generally unscathed.
