Yes, it’s that time of the year again where I pick my top shows of the last 12 months. Many shows – New Girl, The Borgias, Homeland, Nurse Jackie – almost made the list. But in the end there could be only 10… here they are!
REVENGE: There were shows this year with better writing, better directing and better acting. But NOTHING on our screens in 2011 was as ridiculously entertaining as Revenge, the season’s most surprising new hit.
Who would have thought that the primetime soap opera would make a comeback in 2011 and that its story of rich people receiving their comeuppance would seem quite so timely. Revenge has been perfectly played since episode one – hooking us into Emily Thorne’s grand plans to avenge herself on the Grayson family – led by the wonderfully icy matriarch Victoria (Madeline Stowe).
But Revenge has also done a wonderful job of surrounding Emily with a series of equally gripping storylines. There’s grasping social climber Tyler who’s gradually becoming more and more unhinged, bisexual billionaire Nolan who helps fund Emily’s schemes, reformed party boy Daniel who may be the key to Emily’s undoing and the Poison Ivy-like Amanda who’s out to cause a whole heap More >
That’s the challenge currently being faced by Damages, the Glenn Close starrer that’s coming to the end of its run on DirecTV with pretty much no buzz or fanfare!
As you may recall, I was very worried when I first heard that my favorite legal drama was changing channels last year, after being unceremoniously dropped by FX (who then went ahead and laid a giant egg with boxing flop Lights Out).
DirecTV was fine for Friday Night Lights as the show received a second window on NBC – so at least fans could catch it second time around. But Damages was getting no such reprieve – meaning it was exclusive to a channel that most of the country don’t get and probably can’t even find if they have it in the first place! So in a way it doesn’t matter how great this season of Damages is – basically no one is watching!
Well except me that is! So has the move to DirecTV affected the Damages brand?
Thankfully no. Season 4 has just been just as good as year’s past – though you can certainly see the effects of the show’s reduced budget.More >
Here it is – the first sneak peek of the latest season of Damages, one of the best shows on TV.
As a huge fan of the first three series I’m very excited for the new season. I just wish the show had stayed on FX instead of transferring to the little watched DirecTV. Let’s face it – most fans of the show aren’t going to be able to watch.
Which would be a real shame as Damages has been terrific TV for all three of its seasons so far. My favorite series was probably last season, with its wonderful Bernie Madoff inspired plot and standout star turns from Campbell Scott, Martin Short and Lily Tomlin. Man, that was a good year!
Season 4 clearly revolves around terrorism and torture (how very 24!) and John Goodman is obviously going to be a BIG part of the show – he gets more screen time than Glenn Close herself in this trailer.
Plus check out Rose Byrne‘s new look. Rose has had an incredible year at the box office so far – she’s three for three with Insidious, X Men:First Class and Bridesmaids all big hits. Lucky for Damages they snapped her up before her asking price More >
Great news for all you Damages fans out there – our show has been saved!
Yes, in case you didn’t read all the online reports yesterday it’s now been revealed that the Glenn Close legal drama is getting a reprieve – and will be coming back to our screens for a 4th and 5th season, comprising 20 new episodes in total.
As I wrote in my Damaged Goods piece back in April, this is quite a surprise for the industry who pretty much considered the show dead and buried after its third season finale aired earlier this year on FX.
The knight in white armor for Damages comes in the form of DirecTV, the subscription service best known for its expensive adverts featuring movie stars recreating scenes from their most iconic movies…
Is Glenn’s Case Closed?
Uh oh Damages fans, it looks like our favorite legal drama is coming to an end, according to a report in Daily Variety. (See Daily Variety for full article)
To be honest it’s not altogether surprising news. Damages attracts one of the most upscale audiences on TV, receives a lot of DVR playback and has strong international sales. But at the end of the day the ratings for premiere episodes just aren’t strong enough to justify a costly drama (I know the show is shot super cheap but we’re still not talking makeover show budgets). This season Damages is barely clearing a million viewers an episode and a pitiful 0.2 in the 18-49 demo. That’s less than most VH1 reality shows.
I for one will miss the show a lot. You all know my general feelings on legal dramas (see my Career Crisis piece) but Damages was an entirely different beast. Over three seasons we’ve barely seen the inside of a courtroom and we haven’t had to sit through any interminable closing arguments or weepy cross-examinations. Damages was smart enough to avoid all the traditional conventions.
