Summer is over for yet another year – and the Fall TV Season is about to kick off!
But before we say goodbye to the warm weather months for good, here’s one last look back at summer 2011 and the lessons the TV industry learned…
1) Old Favorites Ruled: America’s Got Talent. Hell’s Kitchen. The Bachelorette. Big Brother. This summer audiences couldn’t care less about new offerings like Love In The Wild and In The Flow. They wanted their old favorites and barely sampled any of the broadcast network’s new offerings. The problem? If networks can’t come up with any new hits soon they’re gonna have some major problems down the line when the veteran shows start to fade…
Summer is almost over so it’s time to put away those BBQ sets and beach towels for another year. But before we settle down for the Fall TV Season – here’s 15 Lessons We Learned From Summer 2010…
Networks Execs take note!
1) Scripted Network Dramas Are Dead: Witness NBC’s Persons Unknown (aka Persons Unwatched), ABC’s Happy Town and the Sunday night snoozers The Gates and Scoundrels. All four struggled to attract more than 3 million viewers a week and barely made it through their runs. And the only real scripted ‘hit’ of the summer, ABC’s Rookie Blue, was a middling 5 million rated cop show.
2) …But Scripted Cable Shows Are Hot: Where to begin – Rizzoli and Isles, Covert Affairs, The Closer, Haven, Melissa and Joey, Hot In Cleveland… this summer audiences switched over to cable big time, a cultural shift that will only continue in years to come… fact is viewers are loyal to shows NOT networks. If you want an audience now you have to work for it!
3) Weight Loss Shows Are On The Way Out: The Biggest Loser is still a hefty hit but too many copycat formats failed this summer… Dance Your Ass Off was down year to year, Vh1’s Money Hungry was an outright bomb More >
Of course characters like The Situation, Ronnie and Vinnie are already pretty gay – but this spoof hammers the point home even further!
Who the heck is the blond guy though – doesn’t look very Guido to me!
Why Jersey Shore Deserves Reality Respect
It’s loud, obnoxious and un-PC. But for me Jersey Shore is one of the best things to happen to reality TV in a long, long time. Yep you got that – America’s most controversial twenty-somethings are out of control and out of their minds – and I love it!
Less than a year ago we were all blissfully unaware of the likes of The Situation, J Woww and Snooki. Fist pumping sounded like something from a triple XXX movie. And the Jersey shoreline seemed like a really nice place to go to for a summer break. But not anymore!
For MTV Jersey Shore has been nothing short of network salvation. It’s amazing how just one show can turn around the fortunes of a whole channel – but MTV is displaying a definite swagger now – and most crucially a clear direction. Shaken by the large staff layoffs of 2008 and a series of underperforming shows, MTV seemed creatively uncertain for a while there. On the one hand there was the glossiness of The Hills and The City – vapid teen fantasies of the rich and shameless, sharing primetime space with the gritty and bleak 16 and Pregnant and True Life strand.
