RATINGS – FRIDAY 16TH APRIL 2010

Friday night continues to be a TV dead zone as new show after new show continues to falter.
After a great start a few weeks ago Jamie’s Food Revolution is now faring poorly – possibly a reflection of last week’s weak episode. As I posted, I was a big fan of this show at the start, but it’s gradually becoming more fake and less engaging as it rolls along. A real shame.
Miami Medical is also sinking fast. The overall ratings aren’t horrible but hardly anyone under 50 is watching the show, and it’s unlikely to return for a second season. Remember what I said about America being bored of cop, legal and medical shows… here’s your proof.
Finally NBC ran Secrets of the Mountain – a potential series that was hastily reshaped into a TV movie when the network lost faith in the show. Given the ratings – they probably made the right call!

Flash Forward continued it’s downward ratings spiral – now under 5 million viewers. There’s no way on earth the show will return for a second season – and if it’s not careful it may even get yanked before the end of its current run. Given the failure of Flash and NBC’s Heroes I think the era of high profile shows with complex mythologies may be over. Lost is getting out just in time
Elsewhere it was business as usual. Survivor continues to do well, even in its 20th season!!! And CSI is undeniably aging, but still holding up pretty well with over 13 million viewers. There are many hot new shows that would envy those kind of numbers…

It was the last ever episode of Ugly Betty last night and it was nice to see the series finish on a high – up to almost 6 million viewers, its highest rating all season (and the fact that the show grew across the hour is a clear sign people specifically tuned in). Betty hasn’t always been great – and like many former fans I tuned out this season – but at its best moments the show was super sharp, great fun and pushed some TV taboos. It will be missed.
Fox are really trying to turn Human Target into a hit but this 2010 MacGyver just seems so old fashioned in an era of Jack Bauer and Jason Bourne. It’s season finale likewise showed growth – but is 7.7 million enough to justify a second season? It’s gotta be 50-50 at best.
The rest of the nights’ ratings were business as usual. Modern Family was down a notch for what I thought was the weakest episode of the season. Good to see Idol firmly in the 20’s again – though this is undoubtedly a weak season for talent. And try as I might I just can’t love Cougar Town (though my partner adores it!). At under More >
RATINGS – TUESDAY 13TH APRIL 2010

As predicted Glee stormed back in the ratings last night, clocking up an average of 13.6 million viewers and an amazing 5.6 18-49 share. To put that in context – that’s Glee’s highest ever ratings by a long shot (it’s previous high was 9.6 for the series premiere) and higher than recent episodes of such hits as Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy. Glee is now a certifiable Top 10 show. And while I would have predicted a fall off in ratings in week 2 – given how much hype the Madonna themed episode is generating – including this week’s TV Guide cover – I wouldn’t be surprised if the show actually rises next week!
On the other end of the ratings scale, Melrose Place finally signed off last night with a frankly pathetic 1 million viewers. That’s cable TV numbers and there’s no chance the show will return in the fall. As a huge fan of the 90′s original Melrose has been a wasted opportunity from the very start – bizarre casting decisions (bringing back fan favorite Sydney and instantly killing her off), horrible editing (why did every scene have to start with a crashing music soundtrack) and dull plot-lines (no apartment explosions or killer cults this time around!) RATINGS – MONDAY 12TH APRIL 2010

Dancing With The Stars continued it’s stellar run last night, above 20 million once again, and though it skews old in the crucial 18-49 demos, when your figures are that high it’s almost a moot point.
The CBS comedy block was consistently down across the board, while Castle is a bona fide hit now (confession time – I’ve never watched a single moment of the show!)
Meanwhile 24 is still not getting much ratings love – but wow – what an episode last night! The show is definitely going out with a bang with yet another trademark 24 shocker…
The big question tonight is – how will Glee do after a 3 month break, but with mountains of hype? I’m estimating 12 million. Oh and those of you setting your DVR’s – watch out – I have a feeling Idol will over-run tonight following last week’s non-elimination.

It was CBS all the way last night as a Masters over-run helped pump up ratings for 60 Minutes (aka the show your grandparents watch), Amazing Race (aka the show you used to watch 5 years ago) and Undercover Boss (aka the show you watched for one week and then got bored off).
Celebrity Apprentice is way down this season – a shame as the cast is delivering. It doesn’t augur well for the return of the original Apprentice format in the fall.
Finally, ABC featured a 2-hour Brothers and Sisters special last night. The ratings rose a little versus the last original episode but are a good 2-3 million down on last years similar special. I give Brothers one more year and it’s done.

Friday night continued to prove troubling across the board as not a single show cracked the crucial 2.0 mark in 18-49 ratings.
After a decent start last week Miami Medical started to slip, a fall that will likely continue in the weeks ahead. It’s overall numbers aren’t awful – but to have over 7 million viewers and yet just a 1.4 rating will have CBS worried, especially for an undoubtedly expensive drama.
Jamie’s Food Revolution bounced back after a last week low. It’s nowhere near its premiere numbers – likely the result of an Oprah boost it seems – but 1.6 is an acceptable rating for a non-scripted series. And its repeat numbers weren’t terrible. But with just two episodes left will the show have time to properly prove itself and earn a renewal?

Business as usual on Thursday night with the CBS procedurals dominating both overall and 18-49 ratings.
Flash Forward continued it’s long walk towards cancellation – there surely can’t be any hope of a second season now. I haven’t seen such a spectacular show flameout since Heroes.
Meanwhile the once promising Marriage Ref slumped to just over 4 ½ million viewers. Was it renewed prematurely? Sure looks like it…
Finally it’s amazing how badly several shows are doing in repeats. Grey’s Anatomy under 5 million, Private Practice under 3 ½ million and Community (which doesn’t even do that well for originals) beaten by The CW. Ouch!

Not much action in the ratings last night – business as usual for most of the networks with American Idol dominating as usual (though under the 20 million mark once again). Still the near-elimination of this year’s most unlikeable contestant – out of shape personal trainer Michael Lynche – could bring big ratings next week as two contestants get the chop instead. Simon what have you done?
Ugly Betty continues its ratings slide – barely 4 million viewers for a show that 3 seasons ago was getting 10 million. For ABC the show finale can’t come soon enough.
The CW must also be wishing they never dipped their toe in the docu-soap pool – Fly Girls and High Society are both ratings disasters. Did the network learn nothing from Nashville on Fox a two seasons back. Docu-soaps belong on cable, not network!
