As you probably heard, last night’s Saturday Night Live was the season finale, so the veteran comedy series pulled out the big guns to say goodbye in style.
Hosting the show was Justin Timberlake, while Lady Gaga (plugging that Born That Way album like crazy) was the night’s musical guest.
Together the two teamed up with Andy Samberg for the show’s latest digital short, a sequel to the famous ‘Dick In A Box‘ and ‘Motherlover‘ musical numbers.
This one’s called Threeway and features Samberg and Timberlake sharing a Lady Gaga sandwich, but of course ‘it’s not gay when it’s in a threeway’
Personally Motherlover remains my favorite of the three, mainly because of Susan Sarandon and Patricia Clarkson who really threw themselves into the skit (they also make a cameo here). This one’s okay but Gaga adds little to the mix – and to be honest the lyrics just aren’t that clever – or funny.
But what do you think? And what did you think of the SNL finale in general?
One more returning sketch on SNL – and this time it was the Church Lady, Dana Carvey‘s famously disapproving old shrew…
Unlike Wayne’s World this sketch has held up a lot better for me – I guess religious intolerance is as relevant today as ever!
Freshening up the skit were appearances from the ‘Kardashian sisters’, ‘Snooki’ and the real Justin Bieber, who provokes quite a reaction in the Church Lady.
It doesn’t all work – the sketch is far too long, as always – and the Snooki segment is kind of weak. But Bieber is game for a laugh and I just love the SNL take on the talentless Kardashians, especially Kim.
Here’s the Church Lady in action. Isn’t that special…!
Last night saw the return of Dana Carvey to Saturday Night Live. Dana was of course a former cast member from 1986 – 1993 and created some iconic characters during his years on the show, but since leaving his career has kind of tapered off…
I’m still not sure why Dana came back, but hey, it gave the SNL team the chance to dust off a few old characters – most notably Wayne and Garth from Wayne’s World. Yep, Dana was joined by comedy partner Mike Myers for the show’s cold open – and this was the result.
To be honest I’ve never been a fan of Wayne’s World – either the sketches or the movies – and last night’s skit didn’t convert me either. Aside from an okay Winter’s Bone gag and a nice wordplay on actress Mila Kunis it was all a bit weak and desperate for me…
But what do you think? Glad to see the guys back? Or was this one routine that should have stayed in the comedy archives?
We’ve talked about NBC’s The Cape a few time here on Remote Patrolled, mainly because I kind of can’t believe it actually exists!
The show (which I haven’t caught yet) seems very stylish and glossy – but it’s also built around a pretty ridiculous premise – a mysterious cape that gives it’s owner special powers! I still think the series feels like a cast off from the 1980′s but ratings were solid for the show’s debut last Sunday – and who knows, maybe it will blossom into a hit?
But it seems I’m not the only one feeling this way…. check out last night’s Saturday Night Live spoof of the The Cape featuring all manner of other crazy super-powered items of clothing… it’s pretty silly and doesn’t all work – but it made me smile!
Here’s the clip – check it out…
Last night was the first new Saturday Night Live of 2011 and it was Jim Carrey‘s turn to host the show (though I’m still not quite sure what exactly he was promoting – new movie I Love You Phillip Morris has been out for a while)
As usual SNL was it’s usual mixed bag of goodies – but I did find myself smiling at the gang’s take on critical fave Black Swan.
I saw Swan a couple of weeks back and can understand why it’s so acclaimed – after months of terrible movies out there it was great to see something smart and interesting. In the SNL version Carrey plays the sexualized Black Swan, trying to seduce the show’s choreographer, played by the always reliable Bill Hader.
Basically it’s an excuse for Carrey to pull out his physical comedy schtick we haven’t seen for a while – his performance here reminds me of his In Living Color days…
It doesn’t all work but still worth a watch… check out the SNL Black Swan below…
Slim pickings as usual on last night Jeff Bridge’s hosted Saturday Night Live – but this sketch certainly made me laugh a couple of times…
Regular Remote Patrolled readers will know how much I loathe the Kardashians and consider them pretty much everything that’s wrong with non-scripted TV today – so it was great to see SNL skewering them once again in this holiday themed message…
Check out the Kardashian sisters as played by Abby Elliott, Nasim Pedrad, and Vanessa Bayer (creator of this season’s breakout Miley Cyrus spoof), complete with squeaky voices and general vacuousness. Sure the sisters are an easy target – and not all the jokes work – but I certainly smiled a few times, especially at Pedrad’s Kim – her voice is really funny and I love the trailing off ad libs…
Check it out!
Check out this spoof of MTV from last night’s Saturday Night Live (you know, the one hosted by Scarlett Johansson)
Following the success of Teen Mom and 16 And Pregnant, the network does seem to be an endless parade of teen moms (and dads) – and of course very little music. And while I agree that Teen Mom is fairly honest in its portrayal of teen motherhood, I do think its disturbing that its young stars have now become celebrities and are pursuing endorsement deals and acting careers… not the best example to be setting!
Anyway here’s the SNL treatment… I especially like My Super Sweet 16 – And Pregnant (although the Snooki spoof at the end is a bit of an obvious gag!)
The funny thing – I wouldn’t put some of these suggestions past network heads…
One more quick moment from this week’s Saturday Night Live that made me laugh…
Check out Baby Spanx – the perfect product for that pudgy baby you’re embarrassed to be seen with!
Okay so it’s a one joke premise and the laughs are easy but the sketch is tight and well played… I just wonder with our sister site Good Enough Mother will say…
Here’s the clip… enjoy!
We all know Saturday Night Live is a mixed bag of a show – just check out the appallingly underwritten View parody last night – but when the show is good, it can be pretty darn terrific…
Case in point – check out this great parody of local news headlines – and their love of disturbing teenage trends (we all remember the Lady Gaga contact lens scares and teen vampire bites!)
Not only is the sketch spot on – kudos to Bill Hader for his scare-mongering news reporter patter – but the segment also features last night’s guest host Emma Stone, who just keeps getting better and better in my book (for me Easy A was her Clueless – let’s just hope she does more with her career than Alicia Silverstone did with hers)
Okay so the sketch doesn’t really have an ending, but oh well… if only all of SNL was this good it would be essential viewing…
Here’s the sketch that’s getting a lot of attention today from last night’s Saturday Night Live…
Check out new cast member Vanessa Bayer taking on Miley Cyrus as the teen pop star gets her own talk show… the impression is pretty good and captures Miley’s dim witted teen speak and stock phrases. It’s ‘really cool’.
Plus there’s guest host Bryan Cranston playing BIlly Ray Cyrus – and a terrific impersonation of Johnny Depp by another newcomer Paul Brittain (it’s really spot on!)
The opening monologue gag falls a bit flat but there’s some good stuff along the way – I loved Miley’s garbled questions, insane enthusiasm and general lack of self awareness… do I smell a regular SNL segment perhaps – with an appearance by Miley herself somewhere down the line…?
Check it out and send over your thoughts… was this the funniest moment from last night’s show…?
