SNL Digital Short: Lady Gaga’s Threeway
May 22nd
As you probably heard, last night’s Saturday Night Live was the season finale, so the veteran comedy series pulled out the big guns to say goodbye in style.
Hosting the show was Justin Timberlake, while Lady Gaga (plugging that Born That Way album like crazy) was the night’s musical guest.
Together the two teamed up with Andy Samberg for the show’s latest digital short, a sequel to the famous ‘Dick In A Box‘ and ‘Motherlover‘ musical numbers.
This one’s called Threeway and features Samberg and Timberlake sharing a Lady Gaga sandwich, but of course ‘it’s not gay when it’s in a threeway’
Personally Motherlover remains my favorite of the three, mainly because of Susan Sarandon and Patricia Clarkson who really threw themselves into the skit (they also make a cameo here). This one’s okay but Gaga adds little to the mix – and to be honest the lyrics just aren’t that clever – or funny.
But what do you think? And what did you think of the SNL finale in general?
Saturday Night Live: The Return Of The Church Lady
Feb 6th
One more returning sketch on SNL – and this time it was the Church Lady, Dana Carvey‘s famously disapproving old shrew…
Unlike Wayne’s World this sketch has held up a lot better for me – I guess religious intolerance is as relevant today as ever!
Freshening up the skit were appearances from the ‘Kardashian sisters’, ‘Snooki’ and the real Justin Bieber, who provokes quite a reaction in the Church Lady.
It doesn’t all work – the sketch is far too long, as always – and the Snooki segment is kind of weak. But Bieber is game for a laugh and I just love the SNL take on the talentless Kardashians, especially Kim.
Here’s the Church Lady in action. Isn’t that special…!
Saturday Night Live: The Return Of Wayne’s World
Feb 6th
Last night saw the return of Dana Carvey to Saturday Night Live. Dana was of course a former cast member from 1986 – 1993 and created some iconic characters during his years on the show, but since leaving his career has kind of tapered off…
I’m still not sure why Dana came back, but hey, it gave the SNL team the chance to dust off a few old characters – most notably Wayne and Garth from Wayne’s World. Yep, Dana was joined by comedy partner Mike Myers for the show’s cold open – and this was the result.
To be honest I’ve never been a fan of Wayne’s World – either the sketches or the movies – and last night’s skit didn’t convert me either. Aside from an okay Winter’s Bone gag and a nice wordplay on actress Mila Kunis it was all a bit weak and desperate for me…
But what do you think? Glad to see the guys back? Or was this one routine that should have stayed in the comedy archives?
Saturday Night Live: Jessie Eisenberg Meets Mark Zuckerberg
Jan 30th
It’s the moment everyone’s going to be talking about today – here’s what happened when the fake Mark Zuckerberg met the real deal on last night’s Saturday Night Live...
Jessie was hosting the iconic sketch show for the first time and rumors had been flying around all week that Zuckerberg, the inspiration for Jessie’s Oscar nominated Social Network, might make an appearance. Of course Mark isn’t exactly painted in a great light by the movie – in the film he betrays his best friend, is arrogant, cocky and kind of misogynistic and has pretty limited social skills. So getting the two together was a real coup on the part of SNL.
What a shame they’d waste the moment though on such a lame opening. Jessie was a frenetic ball of energy in his monologue but generated few laughs (I found myself actually feeling bad for him). Then up popped Andy Samberg in a pointless, comedy free appearance as a fake ‘Mark’. Meanwhile backstage the real ‘Mark’ watches with producer Lorne Michaels – clearly nervous and very wooden. And finally Zuckerberg and Jessie are united on stage, the audience cheers, but it’s still not very funny…. such a shame…

Saturday Night Live: The Cape
Jan 16th
We’ve talked about NBC’s The Cape a few time here on Remote Patrolled, mainly because I kind of can’t believe it actually exists!
The show (which I haven’t caught yet) seems very stylish and glossy – but it’s also built around a pretty ridiculous premise – a mysterious cape that gives it’s owner special powers! I still think the series feels like a cast off from the 1980′s but ratings were solid for the show’s debut last Sunday – and who knows, maybe it will blossom into a hit?
But it seems I’m not the only one feeling this way…. check out last night’s Saturday Night Live spoof of the The Cape featuring all manner of other crazy super-powered items of clothing… it’s pretty silly and doesn’t all work – but it made me smile!
Here’s the clip – check it out…
SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE: BLACK SWAN
Jan 9th
Last night was the first new Saturday Night Live of 2011 and it was Jim Carrey‘s turn to host the show (though I’m still not quite sure what exactly he was promoting – new movie I Love You Phillip Morris has been out for a while)
As usual SNL was it’s usual mixed bag of goodies – but I did find myself smiling at the gang’s take on critical fave Black Swan.
I saw Swan a couple of weeks back and can understand why it’s so acclaimed – after months of terrible movies out there it was great to see something smart and interesting. In the SNL version Carrey plays the sexualized Black Swan, trying to seduce the show’s choreographer, played by the always reliable Bill Hader.
Basically it’s an excuse for Carrey to pull out his physical comedy schtick we haven’t seen for a while – his performance here reminds me of his In Living Color days…
It doesn’t all work but still worth a watch… check out the SNL Black Swan below…
SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE: A HOLIDAY MESSAGE FROM THE KARDASHIANS
Dec 19th
Slim pickings as usual on last night Jeff Bridge’s hosted Saturday Night Live – but this sketch certainly made me laugh a couple of times…
Regular Remote Patrolled readers will know how much I loathe the Kardashians and consider them pretty much everything that’s wrong with non-scripted TV today – so it was great to see SNL skewering them once again in this holiday themed message…
Check out the Kardashian sisters as played by Abby Elliott, Nasim Pedrad, and Vanessa Bayer (creator of this season’s breakout Miley Cyrus spoof), complete with squeaky voices and general vacuousness. Sure the sisters are an easy target – and not all the jokes work – but I certainly smiled a few times, especially at Pedrad’s Kim – her voice is really funny and I love the trailing off ad libs…

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE: THE TSA SEX VIDEO!
Nov 21st
A mixed bag as usual on this week’s Anne Hathaway hosted Saturday Night Live – but this skit did catch my eye!
Check out this spoof commercial for the TSA and the new ‘invasive’ pat downs that have been recently been introduced….
Personally I don’t have a huge problem with the concept of pat downs – but I do think the idea of 80 year old women and other unlikely terrorists getting these kind of searches is absurd! And I do wish TSA agents and immigration officers in general were a tad friendlier…. we’re not the bad guys!
Anyway – enjoy the clip…
So did you watch SNL last night – and what were your favorite moments…?
SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE: MATERNITY TELEVISION
Nov 14th
Check out this spoof of MTV from last night’s Saturday Night Live (you know, the one hosted by Scarlett Johansson)
Following the success of Teen Mom and 16 And Pregnant, the network does seem to be an endless parade of teen moms (and dads) – and of course very little music. And while I agree that Teen Mom is fairly honest in its portrayal of teen motherhood, I do think its disturbing that its young stars have now become celebrities and are pursuing endorsement deals and acting careers… not the best example to be setting!
Anyway here’s the SNL treatment… I especially like My Super Sweet 16 – And Pregnant (although the Snooki spoof at the end is a bit of an obvious gag!)
The funny thing – I wouldn’t put some of these suggestions past network heads…
Enjoy!
SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE: JANE LYNCH’S OPENING MONOLOGUE
Oct 10th
You know when it comes to comedy timing you either have it – or you simply don’t. And here’s one woman who has pitch perfect comedy oozing out of every pore - Jane Lynch…
Last night was Jane’s first time at hosting Saturday Night Live, the veteran comedy institution that often lives of falls on the quality of its hosts – and Jane got things off to a strong start with her opening monologue in which she burst into song with her ‘proposed’ Glee theme tune…
To be honest the song itself wasn’t all that great – the writing could have been so much sharper – but Jane has the knack of making even mediocre material funny – and she does just that here. Plus her singing is really rather good! Why haven’t we heard more of this voice on Glee – instead of her two, auto tuned music videos for Vogue and Physical…?
Anyway here’s the monologue in full… check it out and let us know your thoughts…. did you watch SNL last night and did you think Jane did a good job her first time around?
