As regular Remote Patrolled readers will know I’m a fan of NBC’s new alien conspiracy, The Event (check out my Richard Recommends for more). The show chugs along at a stirring pace with likable characters, strong cliffhangers and an intriguing series arc (what is The Event? Who are the detainees of Mount Inostranka? And why does Blair Underwood never age?)
But even though I’m enjoying the show a lot – I suspect like many people out there, I’m having a hard time with some of the show’s more implausible storylines. The Event doesn’t just stretch credibility – it pushes it to absolute breaking point week after week!
So far we’ve watched as computer programmer Sean Walker broke into the FBI headquarters and hacked their top-secret databases in mere seconds – with no police training at all! Then secret alien CIA agent Simon Lee is able to nip out of the White House in the middle of a national security crisis for a secret rendezvous with the lead terrorist Thomas. Thomas is also able to slip a cell phone into the school bag of the President’s son David. And a disappearing airplane over Miami is able to kept a secret from the public at large… Hmm…

Okay – so we’re two weeks into the 2010 TV season and already a few early trends are becoming apparent. Two shows have already been canned (Lone Star and My Generation), many more are struggling, and it’s returning shows that are making all the headlines and getting all the buzz (Glee, Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory and even Desperate Housewives).
Am I surprised… not really! I had a feeling the new season’s batch of newcomers were going to struggle based on the early glimpses I got over the summer. Big on gloss but low on ideas there just seemed to be too many cookie cutter shows… and you know – not everyone wants to watch CBS!
So here’s a few early lessons we can all learn from the season so far… enjoy – and don’t forget to weigh in with your own thoughts below!
When Does It Start: Monday September 20th at 9pm / 8c on NBC
In A Nutshell: This year’s big serialized series. Will it be the new Lost…or the next Flash Forward?
What’s It About: Sean Walker (Jason Ritter) is an ordinary guy whose whole world is turned upside down when his girlfriend goes missing during a romantic getaway. Determined to uncover the truth Sean unearths an international conspiracy involving the President of the United States (Blair Underwood), the Director of National Intelligence (Zeljko Ivanek) and Sophie, the mysterious leader of a group of inmates at a top secret prison.
But what is The Event – and when will we find out?
